Employee Motivation and Retention Strategies at Microsoft Corporation

I read a case online recently about Microsoft's motivational theories within the last 20 years.  Although Microsoft is a great place to be employed now, it wasn't always the best.  Microsoft faced lawsuits and unhappy employees due to the company's size growing rapidly.  Cuts were made in order to recover profits and the employees lost many benefits.  However, a new Senior VP of HR was appointed in 2006 and she changed the way HR and the employees communicated.

She revamped the entire system with new benefits and new workplaces to motivate and retain employees.  Her new system, myMicrosoft, helped employees correspond to other departments, mainly HR.

Although Microsoft may have moved from a great work place, to a poor work place, and back to an employee friendly environment, this shows that the company is willing to work through problems and that employee happiness is a high priority.  Microsoft obviously believes that employees that are treated well, work better which helps the company.

I think this shows that Microsoft is truly a great place to work, seeing as though they put their employees happiness so high on their list.  What do you think?

  1. The treatment of employees is beginning to be as important or more important that how customers are treated. If your workers are treated good, they are more likely to be happy at their job. Being happy at your job is important because your more likely to work better. Happier workers will treat customers better as well. It is good Microsoft has fixed their problems and have become a company that values the treatment of its employees.

  2. I agree that the treatment of employees is crucial to any organization. However, I feel that treating an employee better may not necessarily lead to an increase in work productivity. I feel that treating employees better will help organizational citizenship behavior in any organization. For example, if the company treats their employees very well with a lot of respect than the employees are more likely to do something outside of job description. I agree with all your other points througout the article and found everything very interesting.

  3. I agree that Microsoft is a great place to work because not every company is willing to adapt to their employee's needs. They realized what needed to be done and they took the time and effort to make sure that their employees wanted to come to work.

Companies that only have one way of doing business and expect to have their employees do it their way would most likely have a high turnover. Where more money would be spent for new employees and training for them as well.

Microsoft is an example of a great company that cares about its employees and wants to retain as many as possible and want them to come to work each day with a positive attitude.
